An Open Letter to Oh-Hyun Kwon, Vice Chairman & CEO, Samsung Electronics

Dear Oh-Hyun Kwon,

Today I tried to login to Samsung.com to register a product to my account. When I attempted to login it told me my password was incorrect so I requested a reset. After doing that I received confirmation that it was reset and attempted to login again, copy and pasting the username and new password into the fields to ensure they were correct. It still failed to login so I called customer services.

Calling Samsung customer services is like having teeth pulled out. Let me elaborate: after listening to one of the longest introductions I have ever had the misfortune to hear all about Samsung, my data and its protection and such I got through to a grumpy sounding woman. I explained my login problem to her very explicitly, describing the steps I'd attempted to overcome it. She then responded with: "You have to reset your password", the exact phrase which I had just said to her when explaining what I had done! I kept my patience and repeated the fact that I had just done that, twice.

Her next response was a little more telling. She said I would have to request my password to be emailed to me. She clearly doesn't spend much time on the Samsung website as there isn't an option to request your password. I admit my patience was wearing thin by now but I persevered, explaining that I had already attempted what appeared to be the only option available to me on the website and it didn't work. She put me on hold.

After 5 minutes of being on hold she came back and said I could email support and request that my account was removed, so I could re-sign up on the site. I explained that I already have some devices assigned to that account and they have data backed up against that account so I wasn't keen to remove it if that backed up data was going to be lost in the process. She repeated that I could email them to get the account removed... and I began holding my head to stop it exploding.

I had to repeatedly ask her to confirm if the information would be lost or not as she just kept replying I could send an email to remove the account. Eventually she audibly sighed and asked if she could put me on hold again. After 18 minutes of telephone call the line went dead.

So what to conclude, apart from WOW Samsung that is really pretty special? I do like your hardware but pretty much everything else about the company sucks:
  • Communication: Complete lack of communication about upcoming or prospective hardware and software releases.
  • Companion software: Poor does not adequately describe the Kies companion software or on device App offerings. They are not fit for purpose. The website is clearly just as bad.
  • Customer services: Rude staff with a complete lack of training or knowledge does not constitute a customer services department. I would rather you didn't bother at all.
I'm not an Apple fan-boy but I do think from pre-release to after care their model is a hard one to beat. OK they have the money to do it but really it's not that hard to overcome the above issues with some thought and a modest budget.

With frustration and still unable to log in,

Phil

PS. When I contacted your company via 'Contact us' on your website the representative replied saying "I am sorry to inform you that your email has came through to the wrong department. [Please] forward your email to...". I would ask why he or she couldn't do that themselves rather than responding to me? But it is becoming clear that if there is a worse way of doing something, your team will take it.

[UPDATE] I received a call from Samsung customer services a day later. The manager 'K' initiated a solution to my registration issue and increased the warranty on both the phone and the tablet by way of an apology for the service I had previously received. That's great and I'm very thankful for it but what a shame the team couldn't just get it right in the first place.

Firmware archive | Samsung Updates

I'm fed up of waiting for Samsung to release Android 4.04 to my Samsung tab 10.1 which is a UK 3g version i.e. P7500

They have apparently released it for the non 3g UK version already but it doesn't appear on Kies or over the Air updates for me on my 3g version. As of today it seems they have released it in Italy and the Baltic but that's not much use to me. Why the delay Samsung? I'm left wondering what sort of random roll out plan they have. Are they perhaps using a Risk board game to choose where to roll out next? Some form of communication from them directly would be nice...

Firmware archive | Samsung Updates

[UPDATE] I have spoken to Samsung support and the representative confirmed there is no UK 3g update available yet. They apparently need to test it with the UK carriers in order to ensure it works before releasing it.

ICS Update for Samsung Tab 10.1

SamMobile are reporting that updates should be available for Samsung Tabs in July or August 2012. So now all I have to do is persuade Kies to connect to mine!

Samsung will start the Galaxy Tab Android 4.0 updates next month | SamMobile

Connecting to Kies

I have a Smasung Galaxy S2 phone which the solution I've written about before worked for but I also have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 running Android 3.2. It would connect via Kies wireless sometimes but nothing I tried would get it to connect via wired: it just said 'connecting' and never connects (I've left it for hours like that), or responds with 'Device not responding'. On a Windows 7 machine or a Mac with 10.5 and later OS. I can carry out file transfers and backups but not firmware updates via wireless connection.

I had read online about others with the same issue after a certain firmware update so I got stuff off it using MTP via the Windows machine and then did a factory reset (Settings, Privacy, Factory data reset). This took it back to a different Kernel Version (v2.6.36.3 dated 7th Dec 2011). Once I had done that it would connect to Kies on Windows, but still refuses to on a Mac. To overcome this I installed VMware and a virtual Windows machine on my Mac (more about that here), then, using the inbuilt VMware USB connection settings I connected the tab to the VM.

Once I finally got it to connect to Kies but it then said it had the latest firmware... enough to make me want to smash the tablet!

Seriously Samsung, is Kies Your Best Effort?

Why I love my Samsung phone, but hate the companion software.

I find it baffling that Samsung would spend so much effort on developing their phones and tablets and then deliver them to market with companion software that simply does not work.

I have had my Orange Samsung Galaxy SII for a few months now and on the whole I love it. I’m not an Android obsessive: I do recommend iPhones for some people as I believe they are possibly more suited to the some users, basically because they are less configurable. However, one thing I do not like about the Samsung is the companion software: Samsung Kies. It reminds me of the Nokia Ovi software which I used to use back in the day. Like Ovi, Kies is slow, resource hungry, until recently was PC only and for me it fails to connect most of the time:
KiesCouldNotStart
“Cannot start service on the device. Please disconnect then reconnect the device”

Notice the lack of any useful suggestions like closing applications on the phone or turning USB debugging off, both of which I’ve found are necessary. If I disconnect and reconnect I get the same message again and the “Network Trouble-shooter” is a joke: it just uninstall and re-installs the Windows phone driver!

What is it with these massive companies and their really bad companion software? Don’t they realise that the quality of their product is related to the ENTIRE experience, not just that on the device but also how to sync files (e.g. music) from their computer; upgrade the software; or how easy it is to restore after an upgrade or phone loss?

They didn't need to tie up the USB drivers, software updates, media sync etc. into this rubbish, but rather could have enabled the same capabilities via more 'standard' means e.g. freely distributing the USB drivers, making software updates work over the air (direct from the device: mine simply don't) and supporting standard media sharing/syncing protocols.

It’s no wonder Apple have done so well as they took the time to approach the whole user experience. Mind you, their system has it’s flaws too (e.g. a friend updated to iOS5 and lost all his photos).

Alternatives to Kies

It depends: what do you want companion software for?

Updates
I have Kies installed so as to install the USB drivers. Then I removed it from startup and only run it to check for updates to the phone's software periodically or when I read about an available update.

Email, contacts, calendar etc
I use Google accounts for all that so it’s pointless in Kies anyway.

Music/Media
You can use the MTP service if your device supports if (Android >=3) or connect USB drive when connected to your pc and:

  • Drag/drop
  • Attempt to use Windows Media (supposedly it can manage it but I’ve never managed it)
  • Use a program like Media Monkey or iTunes Sync to manage files.

Good luck, and don’t forget to voice your dislike of Kies to Samsung and anyone/everyone else!

How to Reconnect in Samsung Kies PC Studio Mode

Fix for Samsung Kies “Reconnect the device in Samsung Kies (PC Studio) mode. Current connection Mode not supported by Kies.

The Problem
You connect your shiny new phone to your PC to add some tunes and photos and it comes up with: “Reconnect the device in Samsung Kies (PC Studio) mode. Current connection Mode not supported by Kies.”… but obviously without any instructions how to actually do that… that would be too much to ask wouldn’t it?

 KiesError

The Solution
I couldn’t find anywhere to actually set what sort of mode the phone used to connect so after some searching the solution that worked for me was to:
  1. Re install Kies from Samsung: http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/usefulsoftware/KIES/JSP
  2. Run an update from within it: Mac: Preferences, Update tab.
  3. Exit Kies, disconnect and reboot the phone.
  4. Disable USB Debugging in (Home Screen) Menu, Settings, Applications, Development, USB debugging. (In 4.0.3 Development is in settings, under the sub heading System, near the bottom.)
  5. Start Kies on the computer and wait for it to load.
  6. Kill all applications on the phone using Advanced Task Killer or similar.
  7. Clear memory in the native Task Manager: hold down the Home key, go to Task Manager, then  the RAM tab, then click Clear Memory.
  8. Reconnect the phone via a different USB port
  9. Wait: my tablet takes literally 10 minutes of "Connecting..." before actually connecting.
I hope this helps someone.
